Snowstorm & Extreme Cold Preparation

Winter is well underway in Westchester and Fairfield Counties. With low temperatures and precipitation in the forecast, now’s the time to brush up on extreme weather preparation. Start by winterizing your home and vehicles as soon as possible. Make sure your roof can keep you dry and leak free for another season. Next, make an emergency plan, collect supplies and sign up for an emergency alert system. Stay inside once extreme weather begins and only use your vehicle if absolutely necessary. For more information, follow our tips below.

Emergency Kit:

Create an emergency kit with everything you need to live in your home without power for multiple days. Collect medication, food, fire wood and water. Don’t forget to keep phones charged and extra batteries on hand for a radio. Communicate with your household about an emergency plan. Agree on a meeting place if an emergency does occur and go over escape routes.

Home Preparation:

Make sure your home is winter ready. Weatherproof windows and doors, replace batteries in detectors and take ice dam preventative measures. Furthermore, inspect your roof. It’s imperative to fix damage such as missing shingles before extreme weather hits. If you use a wood burning fireplace or stove, have it cleaned and ready for use.

Emergency Preparation:

Once inclement weather is near, sign up for emergency alert systems available in your area. Pay attention to the news and learn how to spot hypothermia and frostbite. It’s also useful to have an emergency out of town contact that can be of assistance. Depending on the weather conditions, you may need to evacuate.

Vehicle Preparation:

Unless you absolutely have to, driving is not recommended. If you do, make sure your car is winterized by replenishing antifreeze, using snow tires or chains and keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle. It’s always a good idea to keep your gas tank filled just in case.

Stay Indoors:

The best place to be during extreme cold weather is indoors. Stay inside your home with windows and doors shut, heat on and emergency supplies within reach. Wear layers of breathable, moisture resistant clothing. Don’t forget to bring in your four-legged family members as well!

After Extreme Weather:

Stay in your home tuned into the emergency alert system. Wait until extreme weather warnings have been lifted. Once the weather has improved enough to venture outside, use caution. Power lines, trees or other infrastructure may be damaged. In addition, make sure you don’t injure yourself while shoveling driveways or cleaning up the aftermath.
